Alum Shaun Seneviratne’s feature film “Ben and Suzanne, A Reunion in 4 Parts” has been accepted to South by Southwest film festival in March 2024. He shot the film on location in Sri Lanka.

More about the film: Ben Santhanaraj journeys to Sri Lanka to rekindle his relationship with Suzanne Hopper, an American NGO worker, after a long separation. But when Suzanne’s boss demands she work during their vacation, their love is tested by a dilemma: desire versus duty. As Suzanne struggles with the responsibilities of her job, Ben tries everything to revive their intimacy, leading to candid conversations and chaotic twists as New Year’s Eve – and Ben’s departure – looms.

Before creating “Ben and Suzanne, A Reunion in 4 Parts”, Seneviratne’s shorts were screened at Nantucket, Montclair, CAAMFest, San Diego Asian, and Bushwick. He teaches in Brooklyn, NYC, co-hosts Rohmercast, and runs Redacted Screenings. The SMS department is delighted to invite Seneviratne to join the team on Friday, March 29, 2024, at RUFF CUTS as a spotlight guest, where he will discuss his film work in more detail.

This prize recognized Ortiz’s thesis project, Where We Were Safe, the Oral History of the Lost Spaces of Salsa Music in New York City.

Since graduating in 2021, Ortiz has continued developing his transmedia project, which started as his thesis. Last year, an interactive installation of the project toured the US and Latin America. He launched the book’s second edition based on this investigation at the Printed Matters Art Book Fair in LA and developed “Place is Power,” a series of oral mapping workshops. The award comes as a recognition of the recent development of the project.

He co-authored the book with colleague Yvonne Leach, faculty of the Cinema & Television Department at Drexel University, where Natalicchio also teaches.

The book is an evolution of their course material. It examines live-action, fictional television shows produced within a five-year period — such as “Euphoria”, “Normal People”, “I May Destroy You”, and “Stranger Things” — through the lens of the trends they epitomize. For each show, the following are discussed: the significance of the platform and the format; the intentions of the creators and showrunners; pertinent background information; similar shows and precedents; the storytelling approach; the cinematic form; and finally, how the show is symbolic of that particular trend.
