Carolyn Kane

MA, Media Studies

Carolyn L. Kane is the author of the award-winning book, Chromatic Algorithms: Synthetic Color, Computer Art, and Aesthetics after Code (University of Chicago Press 2014). Dr. Kane completed her M.A. Media Studies at The New School University; earned her Ph.D. in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University (2011); and was awarded the Nancy L. Buc Postdoctoral Fellow in “Aesthetics and the Question of Beauty” at Brown University in 2014-2015. She was also on the Faculty of the Film and Media Department at Hunter College in the City University of New York (2011-2014) and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Communication and Design at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Her published work has appeared in the Harvard Design Magazine, e-flux, Leonardo, History of Photography, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Journal of Visual Culture, New Media and Society, Theory, Culture & Society, Third Text, Journal of the International Colour Association, and Visual Communication. Dr. Kane’s book project, Precarious Beauty: Glitch, Noise, and Aesthetic Failure analyzes the popularity of glitch and failure in the historical present and is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press. Her current research project, “Electrographic Architecture: Color and the Development of the Urban Surround, 1910-2010,” investigates the critical role of color in the development of urban aesthetics in international contexts.

The MA in Media Studies gives students experience in creative media making, critical analysis, and entrepreneurialism. The Media Management MS offers the practical experience you need to succeed in today's media industries. The Documentary Studies Certificate program provides an opportunity to study documentary filmmaking in a small, tightly focused program. The Media Management Certificate Program provides a strong foundation of management principles and leadership skills to find work in the ever-changing global media landscape.
