]]> The 45th FINE CUTS annual film screening and awards will happen on Friday May 22, 2024 from 5-9pm. We are extremely proud of the 2024 FINE CUTS film program. The 8 winning films were selected by 26 film committee members, including filmmakers, festival programs, film professionals, faculty, and alumni.
FINE CUTS May 10, 2024, 5-9pm (66 West 12th Street Auditorium). 

FINE CUTS Run of Show: May 22, 2024

  1. 5pm: doors open.

  2. 5:30-5:45pm: Greetings and introductions.

  3. 5:45-7pm: Screening (75min).

  4. 7-7:30pm: Q&A with filmmakers.

RUFF CUTS is the main screening event at the School of Media Studies. It’s a prime opportunity to showcase and get feedback on your work-in-progress films, connecting with fellow filmmakers, colleagues, and professors. We screen around 8 films on a first-come, first-served basis.

Submitting a film to RUFF CUTS

Please submit your films to ruffcuts@newschool.edu and kindly include your name, the title of your film, and the TRT. The slots at RUFF CUTS are on a first-come, first-served, so please submit as early as possible. If we are unable to fit you in for the upcoming RUFF CUTS, your submission will roll over to the top of the following RUFF CUTS!

]]> On opening night of the 10th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival in New York, 6 filmmakers and 6 scientists were randomly paired and sent off into the city to begin filmmaking. The only prompt offered to each pair was to focus their film on the theme: HYBRID-IDENTITY. Each film was created over the course of October 13-20. School of Media Studies’ Macha Rose was one of the filmmakers chosen for the festival. Rose, masters degree candidate at The New School for Media Studies, was paired with Joel Simon, a Rockefeller University professor involved in bioinformatics. Together they created and debuted their short film “Figuration”. Also involved in the film’s production are New School’s Rose Ozkan (director of photography), David Clarke (editor) and New School alum Rick Hamilton (sound recordist).

]]> Current M.A. Student Luz Zamora‘s film “De Colores” was selected for the prestigious DOC NYC festival. Luz produced the film when she was a student in the Documentary Certificate Program.

“De Colores” will premiere in the festival’s selection of work by and about women called, “The Future is Feminine” on Friday, November 10th at 5:15 pm at the IFC Center, located at 323 6th Ave, New York, NY 10014.

]]> Current Student Cristina Müller’s (MA Media Studies + Doc Studies Alumna) short documentary film “Nine Letters” was selected for two great international festivals this month: DOC NYC and LIDF-London!

About the film:

The sensation of living in New York, away from home, is shared by those who come to live in this great metropolis from elsewhere. In Nine Letters, this experience of ‘here and there’ is conveyed by letters, and by images of everyday urban life, evoking the dream state of the present imbued by the past.
You can buy tickets to watch “Nine Letters” here in New York at DOC NYC next week, November 10 @ 10AM.

About the director:

Cristina is a Brazilian-Swiss filmmaker who works as a director and editor, mostly in documentaries and music videos. Her latest projects include Nine Letters, short documentary made during the Doc Studies Program at The New School, The Snow, made at the Kinomada Film Laboratory in Saguenay (Canada), Orchestra Soul, made for Futura TV Channel (Brazil), and pre-editing for the feature documentary Favela Olímpica directed by Swiss filmmaker Samuel Chalard (Switzerland).
