Wes’ career began with producing concerts for Nas, The Roots, The Dave Matthews Band, The Fugees, and A Tribe Called Quest. His first venture, Seven Heads Entertainment, was a vanguard for progressive and community based Hip-Hop. Seven Heads helped launch the careers of Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Talib Kweli, El-P (Run The Jewels), Common, and others. Music from Seven Heads Roster was included in HBO’s “The Wire”, “The Boondocks”, and the film “Brown Sugar” among others.

Wes would later found and lead the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, an annual event that ran for 15 years with the mission to create a world class event to honor Hip-Hop music and culture and the borough of Brooklyn. The Festival hosted a range of talent including Jay-Z, Kanye West, NYS Attorney General Letitia James, Deray McKesson, Kendrick Lamar, Fab 5 Freddy, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Q-Tip, and many others.

BRIC’s programs include the free, summer-long BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, whose 44th season is currently underway; the New York Emmy Award-winning BRIC TV, whose programming includes acclaimed original scripted series, a live daily show, and hyper-local news stories and documentaries; Brooklyn Free Speech TV, a leading public access TV network; a major contemporary art exhibition program; BRIC JazzFest, which brings global legends and emerging artists in jazz to Brooklyn each October; the weekly Stoop Series of free public conversations at BRIC House with artists, authors and filmmakers; family programs; and more. BRIC’s nationally recognized school-based arts and media education program reaches thousands of NYC public school students each year.

The New School, School of Media Studies and Film

(New York City)

Don’t let the name fool you. The New School, located in Greenwich Village, has been around since 1919. It offered the first college course to investigate the motion picture in 1926, and launched the first Media Studies MA program in the United States in 1975. Soon, the college will be among the first tackling a new game-changing form of media, artificial intelligence, by offering an MFA in Digital Film, AI and Emerging Media. Currently, students can embark on a fulltime two-and-a-half-year program for a Media Studies MA, or spend a year earning a Film Certificate or a graduate Documentary Certificate, all with a flexible, interdisciplinary open curriculum, tailored to students’ interests and needs. Maya Mumma, an editor on the Academy Award-winning documentary O.J.: Made in America and the more recent Max documentary Time Bomb Y2K, is a graduate of both the Media Studies program and the intensive Documentary Media Studies program. “I wanted a classroom environment where we learned how to think critically, where we discussed and wrote,” she said in a testimonial for the New School website. “You can understand how the software works, but if you don’t know how to tell a story — a good, authentic, and ethical story — you can’t make a good film.”

Alum Shaun Seneviratne’s feature film “Ben and Suzanne, A Reunion in 4 Parts” has been accepted to South by Southwest film festival in March 2024. He shot the film on location in Sri Lanka.

More about the film: Ben Santhanaraj journeys to Sri Lanka to rekindle his relationship with Suzanne Hopper, an American NGO worker, after a long separation. But when Suzanne’s boss demands she work during their vacation, their love is tested by a dilemma: desire versus duty. As Suzanne struggles with the responsibilities of her job, Ben tries everything to revive their intimacy, leading to candid conversations and chaotic twists as New Year’s Eve – and Ben’s departure – looms.

Before creating “Ben and Suzanne, A Reunion in 4 Parts”, Seneviratne’s shorts were screened at Nantucket, Montclair, CAAMFest, San Diego Asian, and Bushwick. He teaches in Brooklyn, NYC, co-hosts Rohmercast, and runs Redacted Screenings. The SMS department is delighted to invite Seneviratne to join the team on Friday, March 29, 2024, at RUFF CUTS as a spotlight guest, where he will discuss his film work in more detail.

He co-authored the book with colleague Yvonne Leach, faculty of the Cinema & Television Department at Drexel University, where Natalicchio also teaches.

The book is an evolution of their course material. It examines live-action, fictional television shows produced within a five-year period — such as “Euphoria”, “Normal People”, “I May Destroy You”, and “Stranger Things” — through the lens of the trends they epitomize. For each show, the following are discussed: the significance of the platform and the format; the intentions of the creators and showrunners; pertinent background information; similar shows and precedents; the storytelling approach; the cinematic form; and finally, how the show is symbolic of that particular trend.
